Dental post-operative care (Implants)
|
- You can minimise swelling and bleeding by resting, by avoiding
hot foods and drinks and by keeping your head elevated as much as possible.
- Do not take aspirin during this period because it may induce
bleeding.
- Avoid dairy products because they increase the risk of infection.
- Do not smoke for at least 24 hours after surgery. Smoking delays
healing and may lead to infection
- Be gentle when eating because the gums will be tender and the
implants should not be disturbed unnecessarily.
- It is
important to maintain good oral hygiene during the healing process. After 24 hours you can resume cleaning your teeth in a gentle manner, using a
soft toothbrush
Aftercare up to 3 months after implant
surgery:
- During
this period the implants will settle and bond in the jawbone, it is therefore
important to avoid heavy chewing. A relatively soft diet should be followed in
order to achieve the best possible results
- It
should be noted that temporary crowns or bridges if any, should not be regarded
as an indication of how the final restoration will feel. Temporary crowns and
bridges are designed to be easily removable at the final restoration stage.
After final restoration:
- There
are many types of restoration but one overriding requirement for long-lasting
satisfaction, and common to all types of restoration is oral hygiene
- Effective
oral hygiene will entail the use of dental floss and/or inter-dental brushes in
addition to your toothbrush. Your dentist will advise the best way to use them
- Many
of our patients have commented on the value of regular six monthly check-ups
with their dentists and hygienists. It can be determined during such a visit
whether or not the cleaning regime is effective.
- Your
oral regime and your six-monthly visit to your dentist will ensure that you are
